Getting to know a hernia

A hernia occurs when an organ in the body pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. For example the intestines can penetrate the weakened area in the abdominal wall. Hernias usually occur in the abdomen, upper thighs, and navel. However, hernias most commonly occur in the groin area.

Common causes of hernias are being overweight, so that a person experiences pressure in the abdominal area, premature birth, history of hernia disease, and heredity. Hernias are generally more common in men.

Certain conditions can cause the lump to recur, such as screaming, talking too loudly, or lifting heavy objects. Usually these lumps can disappear when the person experiencing them tries to relax by lying down quietly or pushing them inside. If the condition is severe enough, the only way to cure a hernia is through surgery.

The way to prevent hernias is to eat regularly, eat fibrous foods, avoid smoking, consume enough fluids, avoid excess body weight, do not push too hard, and do regular exercise.

One of the recommended sports for people with hernias is yoga. There are several yoga movements that are effective for preventing and treating hernias such as ardha navasana or simple movements such as bending with your hands positioned behind your back.
