Prostate Cancer Treatments that Can Be Done

It is important to remember, when new prostate cancer is detected and is in its early stages, doctors wait and monitor the development of cancer. Treatment will not be given immediately because early-stage prostate cancer treatment has side effects that outweigh the benefits.

However, during the surveillance period, the patient will undergo regular PSA tests and biopsy to detect signs of cancerous growth. If the cancer develops or progresses, there are several types of treatment, namely:

  • Operation. This action can cure prostate cancer if it hasn’t spread beyond the prostate gland. This treatment step is done by cutting a part of the prostate gland. The goal of this surgery is to relieve or eliminate the symptoms of interrupted urination due to prostate cancer. The operation is accompanied by radical prostatectomy to remove the prostate gland and surrounding tissue.
  • Cryotherapy. This treatment is performed in early stage prostate cancer. However, most doctors do not choose this treatment as the first step of treatment. This method uses a blow of very cold temperatures to freeze and kill prostate cancer cells.
  • Radiotherapy. This procedure is performed at an early stage. This method uses radiation energy to kill cancer cells while the cancer has not spread beyond the prostate. Radiotherapy can be used postoperatively to kill any remaining cancer cells, relieve symptoms or pain, and slow the rate of cancer progression in advanced cases of cancer.
  • Hormone Therapy. This method of treatment is combined with radiotherapy procedures. Hormone therapy before radiotherapy aims to increase treatment success. Meanwhile, hormone therapy after radiotherapy to reduce the chance of the cancer cells coming back.
  • Cancer Vaccinations. This cancer vaccine works by encouraging the immune system to attack prostate cancer cells. This vaccine is consumed not to prevent cancer from developing, but to extend the life span of the sufferer for several months.
  • Bone Medicine. If prostate cancer has spread to the bones, its spread can cause pain, fractures or high levels of calcium in the blood. This action aims to prevent or slow the spread of cancer to the bones.
  • Treating End-Stage Cancer. End-stage prostate cancer is no longer curable. Treatment is only to slow development, prolong life, and relieve symptoms.
